Product of the Month
VetaFarm's Nutriblend Breeder
(ASNSW Meeting - August 2012)
(Printable Version - PDF file - Free Adobe Reader download)
The product of the month is VetaFarm's Nutriblend Breeder described as being a high performing formula for breeding parrots.
General Comments
- I use it as a supplement. I feed it to my birds as a supplement to their standard diet, seed and vegetables, etc. I am not a believer in using pellets as a complete diet. I know some people, not particularly using Vetafarm but other products, use pellets as a complete diet. However, one of the things that you have got to look out for if you are using pellets is moisture. You have got to be careful of bacteria in moist weather conditions. The pellets can get a little bit soft and are then susceptible to mould and other fungal organisms. As a supplement food I have never found any problems with pellets. I have an Eclectus Parrot at home that was weaned on those pellets and I have used it with birds that are breeding and consider it to be a good product. I had some initial difficulty with my Eclectus when I tried to introduce a more varied diet.
- Why do they have to put green colouring into the pellets? It resembles Talon rat bait or snail pellets – poison rather than bird food.
- Some of them have just normal looking pellets, no colouring, just brown pellets.
- I feed them to any of my cockatoos, conures, king parrots, everything.
- I have dabbled with them but I generally find it hard to get the birds onto the pellets.
- I know a few people who have lost birds because they were so obsessed with getting their birds onto a full diet of pellets but the birds just wouldn't eat them.
General Summary
It would appear that it is a good product but introducing them to your birds or weaning a young bird onto a more varied diet, is something of a skill that you have got to work at.
(The Gallaghers generously donated the Nutriblend Breeder pellets as an additional raffle prize for the evening!)
